By the method of programmed desorption of ammonia from the surface of alumina-nickel oxide-molybdenum trioxide catalysts, it was shown that, in such oxide catalysts, surface compounds containing nickel and molybdenum or aluminum and molybdenum are formed, whereas part of the surface is occupied by free MoO/sub 3/. It was shown that introduction of a partly dealuminized zeolite into the catalyst promotes the formation of surface nickel molybdates which are especially active in hydrogenation.
