Title: Production of eta and omega mesons in. pi. /sup +/p interactions at 16 GeV

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:6247866

Two and four prong ..pi../sup +/p interactions at 16 GeV/c were used to study the reactions: ..pi../sup +/p ..-->.. p..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/eta, ..pi../sup +/p ..-->.. p..pi../sup +/eta and ..pi../sup +/p ..-->.. p..pi../sup +/omega. The data were taken by the SLAC 1 meter hybrid bubble chamber facility augmented with a lead glass wall assembly for forward going neutral energy detection. The wall was used to trigger the bubble chamber for neutral energy greater than 3 GeV. The detection of the eta and ..pi../sup 0/ signals is shown in the neutral missing mass of the 2 and 4 prongs. A strong ..delta../sup + +/ signal is seen in both 2 and 4 prong topologies. THe invariant mass for the eta..pi../sup +/,eta..pi../sup -/,eta..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/,..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/..pi../sup 0/ and omega..pi../sup +/ are given but no new high mass resonances were found. The cross section for ..pi../sup +/p ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/peta, eta ..-->.. neutrals production was calculated to be 72 +/- 20 ..mu..b, while for the ..pi../sup +/p ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/peta,eta ..-->.. neutrals it was 31 +/- 8 ..mu..b. The cross section for the production of the ..pi../sup +/p ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/pomega was 45 +/- 8 ..mu..b and ..omega../sup +/p ..-->.. ..delta../sup + +/omega was found to be 16 +/- 2 ..mu..b. Signals were observed and cross sections calculated for the following mesonic resonances: delta/sup + -/(980) ..-->.. eta..pi../sup + -/:sigma.BR = 13 +/- 5 ..mu..b, eta' ..-->.. eta..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/:sigma.BR = 8 +/- 3 ..mu..b and B/sup +/(1235) ..-->.. omega..pi../sup +/:sigma = 11 +/- 2 ..mu..b. Cross sections for resonances opposite ..delta../sup + +/ were found: eta'(980):sigma = 6 +/- 1.8 ..mu..b and D/sup 0/(1285):sigma = 4 +/- 1 ..mu..b.
