Title: Studies of the abnormally high peak voltage observed with FeS/sub 2/ depolarized thermal batteries. [Mg/EB-15/FeS/sub 2//SS; improved by change in fabrication of cathode pellet]

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6240005

Studies indicated that the initial voltage spike occurring in FeS/sub 2/ depolarized thermal batteries at low current densities is due to a surface impurity on the FeS/sub 2/ particles. This impurity is the result of a reaction with atmospheric oxygen. Several techniques were developed for lowering the initial peak voltage spike and thereby attaining longer active lives to 75 or 80% of peak voltage cutoff. The most successful technique is to put a thin electrolyte--binder layer on the side of the cathode pellet contacting the collector. 9 figures, 4 tables.
