Title: Apparatus for setting, unsetting, and retrieving a packer or bridge plug from a subterranean well

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6228699

An inflatable packing tool is described capable of being run in a subterranean well by a remedial tubing comprising, in combination, a radially expandable, tubular elastomeric element, a tubular body assemblage securing each end of the elastomeric element against radial expansion; an elongated mandrel inserted through the tubular body assemblage; axially spaced seal means in the tubular body cooperating with the mandrel in a first axial position of the mandrel to define an annular fluid pressure chamber having the unsecured medial portion of the elastomeric element as an outer wall. The mandrel has peripherally spaced, axially extending recesses in its exterior bypassing the seal means in a second axial position of the mandrel; means for connecting the top end of the mandrel to the bottom end of a remedial tubing for run-in; a collet secured to the tubular body assemblage and having latching heads operatively connected to the mandrel to secure the mandrel in the first position; means for supplying fluid pressure through the remedial tubing to the annular fluid pressure chamber to inflate the medial portion of the elastomeric element into sealing engagement with the well bore when the mandrel is in the first position; means for trapping the fluid pressure in the annular fluid pressure chamber; whereby upward fluid pressure forces on the mandrel are resisted by the collet; a latching sleeve telescopically engaging the collet latching heads to secure same in locking relation to the mandrel and having an upward lost motion connection with the mandrel, and means for elevating the latching sleeve to release the collet latching heads from the mandrel and raise the mandrel to the second axial position to deflate the elastomeric element.
