Title: Cut UD system stress in half with oil-immersible arrester

Abstract

An oil immersible arrester (OIA) is available to protect UD system transformers and cables that preserves the dead front feature of pad transformers, will not add to its size, and limits system impulse voltages to less than half the peak value expected when using a junction arrester only. The OIA can reduce the incidence of cable failures caused by trees in solid insulation. The increased protection can be achieved at about one-tenth the cost of remote mounted arrester cabinets and without the congestion of rubber-encased and shielded elbow-mounted arresters. Designed for individual transformer protection, the OIA is most attractive when used on circuits constructed in the higher thunderday locations because it can eliminate the need for higher BIL ratings.
