Title: Isomerization and disproportionation of olefins over tungsten oxides supported on various oxides

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)

The acid amount at different acid strengths increased with increasing amount of tungsten trioxide (0-20% WO/sub 3/) supported on titanium dioxide. The catalytic activity of 5% WO/sub 3/ on various supports for the Broenstedt acid-catalyzed ring opening isomerization of cyclopropane decreased in the order alumina > zirconium dioxide > titanium dioxide > silica, magnesium oxide; the addition of WO/sub 3/ to the support increased the activity of the first three oxides and suppressed the activity of silica and magnesium oxide. The activity of 0-20% WO/sub 3/ on titanium dioxide for 1-butene isomerization corresponded to the measured acid amounts of the catalysts; the cis/trans ratio of the 2-butene products decreased from 9:1 to 1.5:1 as the WO/sub 3/ content in the catalyst increased from 0 to 1, and remained constant with further addition of WO/sub 3/ to the catalyst. The activity of 5% WO/sub 3/ supported on various oxides for propylene disproportionation decreased in the order: titanium dioxide > zirconium dioxide > alumina > silica > magnesium oxide. Hydrogen-reduction of the catalysts enhanced their activity. The disproportionation reaction over titanium dioxide supported 0-20% WO/sub 3/ went through a maximum at 5% WO/sub 3/, and this 5% WO/sub 3//titanium dioxide catalyst was much more active than the conventional alumina/WO/sub 3/ catalysts.
