A method is described for removing sulfur oxides from combustion gases produced during the combustion of sulfur-containing fuels. The method comprises: placing hydrated lime and recycle sorbent into contact with the combustion gases containing sulfur oxides; placing water into contact with the gas stream of preceding step to humidify the gas to within a range of 10/sup 0/C to 35/sup 0/C of dew point and passing the product stream of preceding step through a classifying electrostatic precipitator (ESP) having at least a first upstream collection portion and a second downstream collection portion.
