Topological charge in lattice gauge theory
This dissertation is concerned with the calculation of the expectation value of the topological susceptibility chi/sub t/ in pure SU(2) and SU(3) lattice gauge theory. Through the larger N expansion and PCAC chi/sub t/ is related to the mass of the eta' particle and is predicted to be chi/sub t/ approx. (180 Mev)/sup 4/. The resolution of the old U/sub A/(1) problem in QCD reduces to confirming the above value for chi/sub t/. The Monte-Carlo simulation method is employed in all their calculations. For the SU(2) theory they find chi/sub t/ = (219 +/- 14 Mev)/sup 4/ in close agreement with two other groups. For the SU(3) theory results on a 6/sup 4/ lattice show violation of scaling for ..beta.. epsilon (5.6,5.8). This is expected from the variation of the ..beta.. function at these couplings. However, the results show finite size effects and a calculation on a bigger lattice is underway. For the SU(2) theory at finite temperature they find only a weak suppression of chi/sub t/ above the deconfinement transition, and are not able to make contact with the semi-classical calculations. It is still possible that in the SU(3) theory, a sharp suppression occurs at high temperature.
