Title: Hyperfine structure measurements of high-lying levels of uranium

Abstract

A technique for precisely measuring hyperfine structure of any level of neutral uranium which can be excited by a single or multistep transition from the ground or a low-lying-metastable state has been developed. Numerous spectra were measured and fit to obtain precise hyperfine splitting constants. In particular, measurements on the 31 869-cm/sup -1/ odd level have determined the following: J = 6, magnetic dipole constant A = -47.2 +- 0.6 MHz and electric quadrupole constant B = 1892 +- 26 MHz. Structure of serveral excited states of known configuration were measured including the 15 632-cm/sup -1/ f/sup 2/d/sup 2/s/sup 2/(/sup 5/L/sub 7/) and the 16 930-cm/sup -1/ f/sup 3/dsp (/sup 7/K/sub 5/) levels.
