Title: New way to detect cast iron joint leaks

Journal Article · · Pipe Line Ind.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6205802

Deep probes have been developed to be used in conjunction with air and vacuum testing of cast-iron main and service sections in order to reduce the number of unnecessary excavations. To eliminate the ballast-area soil gas that causes misleading gas evacuation information, a deep probe was designed that samples only from the main depth area and seals off the area above. Residual gas from the main area is removed by sending compressed air down a probe and pulling it with a vacuum up a 2nd deep probe placed about a pipe length from the 1st, on the opposite side of the main. If the evacuated gas concentration falls to a level above zero and remains steady for 5-10 min, then a leak exists between the probes. A 2-man crew can safely and economically locate and repair 1 joint/day.
