Title: Synthesis of higher alcohols from synthesis gas

Abstract

At the present time methanol is the only alcohol commercially produced by direct reaction of carbon monoxide and hydrogen; higher alcohols are produced commercially from olefins. Recently the Institut Francais du Petrole has developed techniques for the production of mixed higher alcohols directly from CO and H/sub 2/. The major product is ethanol with selectivity to alcohol over 95%. The economics of the production of alcohols using the IFP process is analyzed and compared with the usual commercial routes. At the present time it is not economically competitive, but in the long term it represents a viable technology. The use of the alcohol mixture product as an automotive fuel could make it competitive with gasoline as early as 1985. (JSR)
