Title: Adsorption of osmium (IV) chloride complexes on hydrated zirconium dioxide

In their previous work, they showed that hydrated zirconium dioxide (HZD) selectively adsorbs chloride complexes of platinum (II) and platinum (IV), palladium (II), and rhodium (III) from aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions with metal concentration from 10/sup -3/ to 10/sup -4/ M. In the present work, they studied the adsorption of osmium(IV) chloride complexes on HZD under analogous conditions. The adsorption kinetics for osmium(IV) chloride complexes on HZD and the adsorbent capacity were found to depend on the concentration of the complex, the solution acidity and pH, the nature and concentration of the base electrolyte and the temperature. The adsorption of osmium(IV) ions from acid solutions of the chloro complexes proceeds by an ion exchange mechanism. The adsorption from neutral solutions is related to the ligand interaction of the hydrated osmium(IV) forms with the hydroxyl groups of the adsorbent due to the formation of hydrogen bonds. Further hydration and hydrolysis of the adsorbed osmium(IV) chloride complexes are observed in the adsorbent phase.
