Dual-purpose nuclear plants, cogenerating electricity and steam, offer significant economic benefits over comparable electricity generating stations. The design of such a nuclear facility requires the resolution of unique technical challenges. This paper reports on experience gained in the detailed design of such a dual-purpose facility with the steam supplied to a chemical plant for process heating. The following topics are discussed: siting, radioactivity of export steam, optimization for Load Combinations, steam supply reliability, steam transportation, water chemistry, cost allocation.
