Design principle of the high speed single-sided linear induction motors for propulsion of magnetically levitated trains
The design principle discussed in this paper is not based on the primary winding connection scheme, or compensating winding scheme so far proposed. Instead, it is based on increasing the motor length and the number of poles. More precisely, the design principle proposed in this paper is to construct a slim thin LIM. Thin means to reduce the primary leakage reactance by reducing the slot depth. Slim means to make the width of reaction rail narrow or to reduce the weight of secondary side material. Validity of this design principle is confirmed by applying it to high-speed single-sided linear induction motor for magnetically levitated railway (SLIM) and by calculating the operating characteristics by space harmonic method taking into account the end effect. We also discuss the motor length required for the SLIM and the effect of design parameters on the operating characteristics.
