Title: Fission-product iodine in thoria/urania oxides (LWBR Development Program)

Abstract

The ThO/sub 2/ fuel from an undefected irradiation test rod depleted to approx. 5 x 10/sup 20/ fissions/cm/sup 3/ was leached - first with methyl chloroform to extract any free fission iodine, followed by a second extraction with water to collect chemically-combined iodine ions. Equivalent amounts of /sup 129/I were found in each leaching solution. Combined and free iodine (/sup 131/I) were also measured in extractions from lightly irradiated ThO/sub 2/--UO/sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/ powders. The major portion of the identified combined /sup 131/I activity was in the form of iodide (/sup 131/I/sup -/), but both iodate (/sup 131/IO/sub 3//sup -/) and periodate (/sup 131/IO/sub 4//sup -/) were also detected. Most of the intentionally-introduced iodine was retained by unirradiated ThO/sub 2/ powders on vacuum annealing up to 700/sup 0/C and released at 1000/sup 0/C. The experimental results were correlated with available data on radioiodine release from irradiated ThO/sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/.
