Because of the importance of hydrocarbons as a current and future source of energy, the American Petroleum Institute, the American Gas Association, and the Canadian Petroleum Association annually publish information on proved reserves of crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas in the United States and Canada. Presented in this volume are the estimates of proved reserves developed by the three committees as of December 31, 1977, together with additional information pertaining to reserves in the United States. A brief summary comparing proved hydrocarbon reserves in the United States and Canada as of December 31, 1976 and 1977, precedes the committee reports.
