Title: Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrite to nitrous oxide and ammonia based on the N-methylated, cationic iron porphyrin complex (Fe/sup III/(H2O)(TMPyP))V

An electrochemical study of the N-methylated, cationic iron porphyrin complex (Fe/sup III/(H2O)(TMPyP))V (TMPyP = meso-tetrakis(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphine dication) has shown that the complex is an effective electrocatalyst for the reduction of nitrite to N2O, NH3, and, by inference, hydroxylamine at a potential of -0.65 V (vs. SCE); reduction at -0.9 V leads to a decrease in the relative amount of N2O produced.
