Title: Heating and cooling system having auxiliary heating loop

Abstract

A new and improved heating and cooling system is described comprising: a first loop comprising a compressor, an outside air heat exchanger, first expansion means, and a condenser connected in series to facilitate the flow of a refrigerant there through, conduit means connected between the compressor and the condenser adapted to cause the refrigerant to bypass the outside air heat exchanger, first valve means in the conduit means to cause the refrigerant to flow through the outside air heat exchanger and the first expansion means and a second condition to cause the refrigerant to bypass the outside heat exchanger and the first expansion means and flow via the conduit means directly through the condenser from the compressor, a second loop comprising second expansion means, a second heat exchanger, and one-way valve means connected in series between the condenser and the compressor of the first loop, the second heat exchanger adapted to transfer heat to the refrigerant as the refrigerant flows between the second expansion means and the one-way valve, and second valve means connected between the first loop and the second loop, the second valve means being operable between first and second conditions whereby the refrigerant is caused to flowmore » directly from the condenser to the compressor thereby bypassing the second loop and through the second expansion means, the second heat exchanger, and the one-way valve of the second loop such that heat from the second heat exchanger is transferred to the refrigerant flowing through the second loop and the condenser functions as an evaporator effective to transfer heat from the refrigerant to the air outside when the first and second valve means are in their second conditions respectively; wherein the second heat exchanger comprises a coil mounted in a storage tank, and means for circulating heated water through the storage tank from an external source, and wherein the external source comprises a domestic hot water heater.« less
