Polarization and magnetic moment of the cascade minus hyperon
The magnetic moment of the ..xi../sup -/ hyperon has been measured to be -0.716 +- 0.040 nuclear magnetons by observing the precession of the ..xi../sup -/ polarization vector in a magnetic field. The ..xi../sup -/'s were produced by 400 GeV protons at angles of +- 5 and +- 7.5 mr, and had momenta between 105 and 290 GeV/c. The charged particles from the ..xi../sup -/ ..-->.. ..lambda.. ..pi../sup -/ and ..lambda.. ..-->.. p ..pi../sup -/ decays were detected in a multiwire proportional chamber spectrometer. Results are based on 192,110 events. The measured ..xi.. polarization is presented as a function of ..xi../sup -/ momentum. The average polarization was -0.093 +- 0.007. The helicity of the decay ..lambda..'s was also measured, giving the value of ..cap alpha../sub ..lambda../..cap alpha../sub ..xi../ = -0.303 +- 0.004 +- 0.004.
