Properly size fixed-bed catalytic reactors

Fixed-bed reactors form the majority of catalytic reactors now in use. Yet, for all their popularity, such reactors can be challenging to size correctly. In this article, the authors provide a proven approach for sizing commercial fixed-bed catalytic reactors. It involves: (1) developing reaction mechanisms for the chemical process; (2)deriving the kinetic model for each mechanism; (3) determining which mechanism best described the process; (4) estimating the kinetic parameters for that mechanism; (5) testing the kinetic model; (6) determining the effect of mass transfer; and, finally, (6) sizing the commercial fixed-bed catalytic reactor.
