Low-energy effective Lagrangian of heterotic string theory

By studying the four-point tree amplitudes in heterotic string theory, we explicitly show that the action involves only curvatures of a generalized connection, which differs from the connection found at the three-point level. It is also shown that the curvature tensor and the Yang-Mills gauge field appear as the perfect square (R/sup 2/-F/sup 2/)/sup 2/ which holds even for this generalized connection. Some considerations of higher-derivative interactions and their implications for the N = 2 sigma model are made.
