Comparisons between experimental results and analytical predictions of seed-slag fouling in an MHD steam bottoming plant

At Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), the fouling of convective heat transfer surfaces of an MHD steam plant by seed and coal ash was investigated in experiments conducted in the Fossil Energy Users Laboratory (FEUL). Data on vapor and particle deposition rates, heat transfer rates, and deposit characteristics were obtained. The test results were interpreted by an analytical model that calculated the heat transfer rates and the deposition rates of seed and ash at the surfaces of a tube bank. In this paper, the test results and the analytical model are described, and the interpretation of the test data by the model is discussed.
