Battery charger
This patent describes a battery charge composed of a number of interrelated components. The first component is a means for developing DC voltage from AC line voltage. An integral part of the system is a switching means, including a transformer and a pair of field effect transistors connected in half-bridge configuration, for chopping DC voltage to produce pulse trains. The secondary winding of the transformer is split and is connected between the gate and source of the respective FETs. A step-down transformer of the system converts the pulse trains from high-voltage low-current pulse trains to low-voltage high-current pulse trains and a rectifying means for converting this final pulse output to an output DC voltage and charging current (DC) which is coupled by an output means to a battery which is to be charged. A modality for supplying an output voltage reference signal representing a predetermined output voltage as well as supplying an overload voltage reference signal representative of an excessive overload caused by a battery to be charged is included. A control means responsive to output voltage and overload signal for controlling the operation of FETs is vital to the system also.
