The microcomputer and the scientific workstation have opened a new era in scientific computation. The proceedings from the ARO Workshop on Microcomputers in Large-Scale Scientific Computing, held in Newark, De. in May 1985, addresses both the potential and the limitations of this new computing environment. Topics include a method to analyze the kind of workstation appropriate to both computing needs and available finances; the issues involved in linking workstations, mainframes, and supercomputers; ways to import subroutine libraries on PC-type machines; programs runnable over a wide class of machines; and the solution of complex problems on microcomputers.
