Department of Energy Fiscal Year 1983 budget on environment, health, and safety. Hearing before the Subcommittee on Natural Resources, Agriculture Research and Environment of the Committee on Science and Technology, US House of Representatives, Ninety-Seventh Congress, Second Session, March 11, 1982
Alvin W. Trivelpiece of DOE and Willian Vaughan of the Environmental Protection Agency were the principal witnesses at a hearing to evaluate DOE's reduced budget request for environmental, health, and safety research. Of particular concern were the consequences of cutting the research budgets for work on the cancer and genetic effects of energy technologies, the effects of acid rain, human radiotherapy, and health-risk analysis. Trivelpiece and associates described the results of basic environmental and health research from the beginning of the Atomic Energy Commission. They made assurances that the current budget proposal is adequate, given the emphasis on appropriate missions, review processes and quality control, and cooperative information exchanges. Vaughan also assured the committee that DOE's health and safety responsibilities can be met with the proposed funding. (DCK)
