Title: Federal land management policy and the drive to develop an alternate energy source, geothermal energy: shall the twain ever meet

Journal Article · · Nat. Resour. J.; (United States)

Present land-use planning for Federal lands is not compatible with a national policy of achieving energy independence if exploration and development must wait for an inventory and classification to be made of all Federal lands. The Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (FLPMA) is examined to see what its impact will be on onshore energy development, particularly from geothermal resources. It is concluded that the Bureau of Land Management's budget and personnel levels must be upgraded and potential geothermal sites should be given high priority in the inventory and evaluation process.
