Manual and automated turbidimetric methods for the determination of polyacrylamides in the presence of sulfonates

Petroleum sulfonates interfere with the standard turbidimetric method for the determination of polyacrylamide polymers in oil field brines. This interference was eliminated by adding a butanol extraction step to remove the sulfonates. From the new manual procedure an automated method was developed for use with an AutoAnalyzer. Samples with polymer concentrations ranging from 10 to 1200 mg/cu dm can be analyzed at a rate of 20/hr with extraction and 30/hr without extraction.
