Title: Insulate to pour tower foundations in winter

Abstract

If a newly poured concrete foundation for a transmission tower freezes, the concrete will not develop the compressive strength that uninterrupted curing can achieve. For this reason, construction is often deferred until winter's end. An alternative to delaying construction is to prevent freezing by insulation - the method used to hasten completion of a portion of an HVDC transmission line last winter in Minnesota.
