Uncontrolled agglomerate formation during ceramic powder synthesis and processing results in physical and/or chemical inhomogeneities in the sintered microstructure. The various techniques used to suppress agglomerate formation, which occurs during the synthesis and processing of wet-chemically prepared powders, are reviewed. The characteristics of the green compact required to achieve a high-density material with a homogeneous microstructure at low sintering temperatures are discussed.
