Geophysical logging strategies for assessing groundwater monitoring well integrity

The groundwater industry has developed geophysical logging methods which have proved effective in assessing groundwater monitoring well construction and integrity. These methods are similar to oilfield production logging methods, but have been adapted to monitoring well constructions as determined inside of PVC and steel casing. Well construction, water level, and regions of investigation for various logging methods were considered to develop a monitoring well assessment strategy. Several of the electrical, nuclear, and mechanical methods were evaluated. The petroleum industry developed a gamma-gamma (density) logging tool which is adapted for gravel pack evaluation. The analogous use of the density log for characterizing the annular space in monitoring wells has been previously demonstrated; however, the authors have developed an approach to facilitate density log interpretation. The 4-pi density log is calibrated to the compensated density log and overlaid for an improved presentation. The high-resolution density tool developed for coal exploration was used to detect steel centralizers on PVC casing and corrosion of steel casing. The thermal neutron log was used in combination with the density log to distinguish between water-filled and air-filled voids and channels behind casing. Focused (guard) logs proved more effective than SP, 16--24 normal, induction, and single point resistance logs for detecting slots, joints, and holes in PVC casing below the water level. The significance of possible channeling or voids in the annular space was evaluated by locating such defects relative to aquitards. The natural gamma (gamma-ray), neutron, and induction logs were used to determined the location of aquitards.
