Rate of escape of Brownian particles over potential barriers

A convenient method is introduced to calculate the rate of escape of Brownian particles over potential barriers by the exact solution of the Smoluchowski equation. This method is applied to calculate the nuclear fission rates. The results for four different cases are compared with the results of other theories.
