Title: Improvement of IRI profiles of O2(+), NO(+) and O(+) by means of airglow measurements

Conference · · Adv. Space Res.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6047790

The possibility of determining the vertical ion distribution of O2(+), NO(+) and O(+) through combined satellite airglow and plasma measurements is determined theoretically. The oxygen airglow lines used in the calculations are the UV oxygen line at 135.6 nm and the red oxygen line near 630 nm. A series of computations is performed in order to predict the emissions characteristic of the airglow in different layers of the ionosphere and in different electron densities. Corrections to the densities of the International Reference Ionosphere model are obtained which are consistent with the airglow at an altitude of 180 km.
