A method is described of cutting a tunnel having a flat floor that is wider than the tunnel roof with a mobile mining machine comprised of a wheel-like cutter head assembly means for cutting rock having multiple peripherally mounted roller cutter units, means for rotating the cutter head assembly about its horizontal axis, pitch boom assembly means supporting the cutter head assembly means and causing vertical movement of the cutter head assembly means, frame means having a longitudinal axis and a vertical axis, swing boom assembly means supported by the frame means and supporting the pitch boom assembly means, the swing boom assembly means having a pivot axis oriented at an acute angle from the vertical axis of the frame means such that the swing boom assembly causes lateral movement of the cutter head assembly means and the pitch boom assembly means with respect to the frame means, thrust means for thrusting forward as a unit the frame means, the swing boom assembly means, the pitch boom assembly means and the cutter head assembly means, and holding means for anchoring the mobile mining machine in the tunnel during energizing of the thrust means, the holding means including transport means for locomotion of the mobile mining machine, the method comprising the steps of: extending the holding means to contact the tunnel walls; energizing the cutter wheel assembly means to rotate the roller cutter units about the horizontal axis of the cutter wheel assembly means; energizing the pitch boom assembly means to vary the pitch of the cutter wheel assembly means relative to the tunnel work face; extending the thrust means to force the frame means forward along the tunnel relative to the holding means; energizing the swing boom assembly means to sweep the cutter wheel assembly means across the tunnel work face; retracting the holding means from the tunnel walls; and retracting the thrust means to draw the holding means forward relative to the frame means.
