Title: Inverse mode conversion of ion Bernstein waves in tokamak plasmas

Abstract

The inverse linear mode conversion between an electrostatic ion Bernstein wave and an electromagnetic fast Alfven wave in tokamak plasmas is investigated using a self-adjoint system of equations of fourth order that includes cyclotron and Landau damping processes. Over a broad range of cases investigated, the reciprocity of the mode conversion coefficients between the ion Bernstein and fast waves is observed to hold, within numerical accuracy, even in the presence of strong cyclotron absorption. It is also found that strong bulk ion heating occurs at twice the cyclotron frequency for direct launching of an ion Bernstein wave into a plasma that contains no ionic species that are resonant at the fundamental cyclotron frequency.
