Title: Production of a hydrogen-rich gas from a hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide-containing fuel gas

Abstract

Continental Oil Co.'s improved method for the production of hydrogen from a coal-derived synthesis gas not only uses the carbon monoxide in the synthesis gas to produce hydrogen but also recovers the hydrogen already present. In the process, the synthesis gas passes through an aqueous solution of alkali metal carbonate and bicarbonate in a catalytic reaction zone to produce formate from the carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide in the gas. The formate decomposes under catalytic conditions to a hydrogen-rich gas and an aqueous solution of alkali metal carbonate and bicarbonate.
