The Decision Advisor For Aging Components (DAAC) is a demonstration decision support tool developed to test the feasibility of using Intelligent Decision Systems{sup TM} (IDSs) and decision analysis to support plant managers and engineers in making major, recurring operational decisions regarding aging components. One of the most important life optimization decisions-run/repair/replace (R/R/R) on high temperature headers -- was selected as the example case for this demonstration. The DAAC, which minimizes the need for a professional consultant in decision analysis, was designed, constructed, and exercised using some case study data to test the DAAC's efficacy. Results are presented in the form of a tour through the demonstration system during the structuring, evaluating, and appraising steps in the analysis and a presentation of the custom decision templates that can be used subsequently to evaluate similar decisions having different input parameters. The DAAC successfully demonstrates the feasibility of supporting operational decision-makers through automated decision support tools requiring limited training for the users in the concepts and practice of decision analysis. It also indicates the feasibility of applying this approach to analyzing the full range of major maintenance decisions -- beginning with other major plant components -- and selecting the best actions across the entire portfolio of maintenance actions. The DAAC is a proof-of-concept demonstration of a decision support tool not yet available for general utility use. It needs to be refined and expanded both in scope and depth and tested as a prototype in actual utility applications prior to final system specification and development.
