Acceleration of laser-produced ions in a small Van de Graaff

The acceleration of heavy ions, produced in a laser-induced plasma, with a Van de Graaff has been demonstrated. In order to generate the ions, a prototype of a laser-ion source was constructed. Using a small Nd:YAG laser (flux< or =6.5 x 10/sup 8/ W/cm/sup 2/, pulsed), we were able to measure charge states of positive ions, Fe/sup n/+, Ta/sup n/+, Au/sup n/+ with n< or =4. Currents up to 0.6 mA (during the pulse) could be observed.
