Environmental Analysis System--White Sands Missile Range
- White Sands Missile Range, NM (United States)
White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), in south-central New Mexico, is a member of the Department of Defense (DoD) Major Range and Test Facility Base. Historically, WSMR has attempted to comply with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) on its two million acres by having each incoming project complete a Record of Environmental Consideration (REC), and Environmental Assessment (EA), or an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). These studies have yielded a great deal of information, but the information is scattered and difficult to utilize effectively. WSMR is currently developing a three part Environmental Analysis System (EAS) which will consolidate these data and improve the decision-making process. First, a range-wide EIS will address the environmental impacts of current and planned future levels of activities at WSMR. Second, a Geographic Information System (GIS) will consolidate, accumulate, and graphically display that environmental information. The third part will be a Decision Analysis System (DAS). This DAS will be designed to provide a potential range user with needed environmental information and will list additional environmental actions required prior to mission execution. Overall, it is expected that the EAS will enhance stewardship, provide better mission support, reduce costs to the customer, reduce delays due to environmental analysis requirements, and improve NEPA compliance.
