Title: Plume rise model development and validation for gas transmission industry reciprocating engines and gas turbines

Two field programs sponsored by the pipeline research committee of the American Gas Association were conducted to measure plume trajectory from gas turbines and reciprocating engines used in the gas transmission industry. Plume rise from one gas turbine and three reciprocating engines was measured. The exhaust plumes were made visible by creating sequential visible puffs in the plumes. Approximately 1000 puffs were generated and tracked downwind. The 42 hours of plume rise observations were used to evaluate plume rise models for use with gas transmission industry sources. Most commonly used Gaussian atmospheric dispersion models use the plume rise models developed by Briggs. These plume rise models were developed from plume rise observations taken mainly from power plant stacks and other large emission sources. The primary objective of this study was to gather field data to be used to evaluate these models for use with gas transmission industry gas turbines and reciprocating engines. A secondary objective was to develop a new plume rise model for the gas transmission industry if the plume rise predicted by the Brigg's models was significantly different than was measured.
