Title: DOE contracts for developing continuous coal-feeding systems

Abstract

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded contracts totaling nearly $8 million to Lockheed Missiles and Space Co., Inc., Foster-Miller Associates, and Ingersoll-Rand Research Inc. to develop and demonstrate economical continuous coal-feeding methods for gasification and liquefaction of coal. Current systems for dry-feeding coal to conversion reactors are considered unreliable and expensive, and generally handle the coal in batches rather than continuously. According to G. Fumich (DOE) effective conversion requires that coal be processed inside high-pressure reactor chambers and fed continuously.
