Title: Study of. pi. /sup -/ and. pi. /sup 0/ leading effects in. pi. /sup -/p interactions at 40 GeV

Abstract

The behavior of leading ..pi../sup -/ and ..pi../sup 0/ mesons with x>0.7(x=2p*/sub parallel/ /..sqrt..s) in ..pi../sup -/p interactions at 40 GeV/c is studied using the three-Reggeon approach. The analysis is based on the use of the kinematic peculiarities of the reactions ..pi../sup -/p..--> pi../sub L//sup -/ +X and ..pi../sup -/p..--> pi../sub L//sup 0/+X, which are manifested in the considerable asymmetry of the particle emission in the c.m. frame. The use of the three-Reggeon formalism permitted us to find the parameters of the three-Reggeon vertices and the cross sections for these reactions: sigma/sub pi-p/..--> pi..-...=3.40 +- 0.10 mb and sigma/sub pi-p/..--> pi..0... =0.93 +- 0.15 mb for x> or approx. =0.7. The kinematic perculiarities of these reactions, which are due to the dynamics of the hadron-Reggeon interaction permitted us to study the characteristics of Reggeon-hadron interactions (p/sup -/p, p/sup 0/p, and P'p collisions). On the basis of this analysis it is shown that the properties of the single-particle distributions of charged pions are similar in hadron-hadron and Reggeon-hadron collisions, which is evidence in favor of the multiperipheral model of pion-proton interactions.
