Title: Transient modeling and analysis of MHD plants. Volumes 1 and 2, Final report, SBIR Phase 2

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5961410

The work reported in the study deals with the integration and operation of magnetohydrodynamic electrical power generation (MHD) plants on electric utility systems and specifically considers the transient stability time frame in which disturbances can produce responses throughout the utility network. The objectives of the study were to: (1) identify an actual utility system on which the code developed in the study could be exercised; (2) consider the MHD generator from the viewpoint of transient behavior and develop appropriate modeling and analytical techniques; (3) develop models of the associated plant alternator, utility interface and grid systems; (4) code write and verify an MHD transient code; and (5) undertake transient stability analysis for representative three-phase faults on the selected utility system, including the role of the MHD generator in determining the stability limits.
