Title: Wintertime current meter measurements from the East China Sea

Abstract

An array of three current meters were anchored on the continental shelf of the East China Sea during the last half of February 1975 as part of the Japanese Air Mass Transformation Experiment, AMTEX-75. The results indicate that the currents are dominated by the rotational semidiurnal M/sub 2/ tidal component superimposed on a slow mean drift to the northeast. Differences in direction of several days duration between two of the current meters suggest the presence of transient mesoscale eddies or meanders in the flow regime.

  • Rapid economic growth over the last 30 years in China has led to a significant increase in aerosol loading, which is mainly due to the increased emissions of its precursors such as SO 2 and NO x. Here we show that these changes significantly affect wintertime clouds and precipitation over the East China Sea downwind of major emission sources. Satellite observations show an increase of cloud droplet number concentration from less than 200 cm -3 in the 1980s to more than 300 cm -3 in 2005. In the same time period, precipitation frequency reported by voluntary ship observers was reducedmore » from more than 30% to less than 20% of the time. A back trajectory analysis showed the pollution in the investigation area to originate from the Shanghai-Nanjing and Jinan industrial areas. A model sensitivity study was performed, isolating the effects of changes in emissions of the aerosol precursors SO 2 and NO x on clouds and precipitation using a state-of-the-art mesocale model including chemistry and aerosol indirect effects. Similar changes in cloud droplet number concentration over the East China Sea were obtained when the current industrial emissions in China were reduced to the 1980s levels.   • Three vertical water profiles of {sup 210}Pb and {sup 210}Po have been measured in the East China and Philippine seas. All the profiles show a large {sup 210}Po deficiency of {approximately} 8 dpm/cm{sup 2} relative to {sup 210}Pb in the top {approximately} 1,000 m of the water column. Based on the {sup 210}Po deficiency, the steady state flux for {sup 210}Po removal from the surface water is estimated to be 14 dpm cm{sup {minus}2}/yr. The {sup 210}Po/{sup 210}Pb ratio of sinking particles will be too high unless an additional source of {sup 210}Pb into the surface is accounted for. Thusmore » the large {sup 210}Po deficit is probably caused by the increased atmospheric input of {sup 210}Pb without any significant {sup 210}Po, which is focused in the Kuroshio region by isopycnal transport, and the preferential scavenging of {sup 210}Po relative to {sup 210}Pb by settling particles. The transient model calculations indicate that the model can account for the observed high excess {sup 210}Pb inventory and large {sup 210}Po deficiency in the water column if focusing of atmospherically derived {sup 210}Pb in the Kuroshio water is a factor of 2-3 more than the local input. Such lateral redistribution by the western North Pacific gyre circulation is not inconsistent with the deeper penetration and the high water column inventories of anthropogenic substances observed in this region.« less
  • This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of interannual and interdecadal variations of summer precipitation and precipitation-related extreme events in China associated with variations of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) from 1979-2012. A high-quality daily precipitation dataset covering 2287 weather stations in China is analyzed. Based on the precipitation pattern analysis using empirical orthogonal functions, three sub-periods of 1979-1992 (period I), 1993-1999 (period II) and 2000-2012 (period III) are identified to be representative of the precipitation variability. Similar significant variability of the extreme precipitation indices is found across four sub-regions in eastern China. The spatial patterns of summer mean precipitation,more » the number of days with daily rainfall exceeding 95th percentile precipitation (R95p) and the maximum number of consecutive wet days (CWD) anomalies are consistent, but opposite to that of maximum consecutive dry days (CDD) anomalies during the three sub-periods. However, the spatial patterns of hydroclimatic intensity (HY-INT) are notably different from that of the other three extreme indices, but highly correlated to the dry events. The changes of precipitation anomaly patterns are accompanied by the change of the EASM regime and the abrupt shift of the position of the west Pacific subtropical high around 1992/1993 and 1999/2000, respectively, which influence the moisture transport that contributes most to the precipitation anomalies. Lastly, the EASM intensity is linked to sea surface temperature anomaly over the tropical Indian and Pacific Ocean that influences deep convection over the oceans.« less
  • Increasing attention of oceanographers has recently been paid on East Asian marginal seas regarding their role on the global environment, yet geochemical investigations have been few to date. The authors here report new data on the distribution of {sup 228}Ra and {sup 226}Ra in the surface water of the East China and the Yellow seas in an effort to constrain the time necessary for the coastal and shelf waters to exchange with offshore waters. Such information is needed in evaluating the exchange of heat and water across the air-sea interface that affects the local climate and the fate of pollutants,more » nutrients and weathering products supplied from the continent. Based on the Ra isotope signals, the authors have estimated that the shelf water component contributes {approximately} 20% of the Tsushima Current water passing through the Tsushima Strait and the mean residence time for the shelf water to mix with the Kuroshio surface water is {approximately}2.3 years. As many of materials derived from the continent such as heavy metals and the nutrients have their mean residence times less than a few months in the nearshore and shelf waters, they must largely deposit on the shelf sediments prior to the transport from the shelf to the open sea by mixing.« less
  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are among the most persistent and toxic pollutants in environment. Determination of these contaminants in fish, shellfish and other mollusc is very important, not only because these aquatics are important food for mankind, but also because they can bioconcentrate contaminants preferentially in their adipose tissue, and serve as biomarker of the aquatic pollution. Mussels and oysters have been widely used to monitor the pollution in the coastal environment.
