Title: Method and apparatus for measuring the earth formation resistivity of a plurality of radial regions around a borehole

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5922830

This patent describes an apparatus for providing signals indicative of the electrical resistivity of a subsurface formation traversed by a borehole, comprising: an elongate sonde body adapted for longitudinal movement through the borehole. The body includes a first electrically conductive body section operative to emit electrical current, an insulating section, and a second electrically conductive body section in endwise connection; a pad connected to the sonde body and having a borehole wall engaging face of conductive material. The pad includes at least three current electrodes disposed at different longitudinal locations along the conductive face. The electrodes are operative to emit survey current; means electrically connected to the conductive face and to the first conductive body section for maintaining the conductive face and the first conductive body section at substantially equal electrical potential; electrical conductor means carried by the apparatus for returning current emitted from the first conductive body section and the conductive face; and means connected to the pad and to the sonde body for urging the conductive face into engagement with the wall of a borehole and for maintaining the conductive face at least partially within a current field emitted from the conductive body section.
