One of the first uses for natural gas could become one of the most important uses of natural gas in the future. Compressed natural gas has the potential to power many millions of vehicles in North America and around the world, in almost any application and for almost any purpose. The idea of using natural or manufactured gas to fuel an internal combustion engine is one of the oldest ideas in the industry. German inventor Nicholas Otto built the first practical four-cycle gas engine in 1876, nine years before Karl Benz built the first vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine. The pages of the American Gas-Light Journal in the late 1800s are filled with advertisements and articles on gas engines and their place in industry. Today, the idea of using compressed natural gas to replace gasoline is better than ever. The technology is developed to the point where it can compete with gasoline in every aspect and win. Existing gasoline and diesel engines can be easily converted to dual fuel capability. Thousands of CNG-powered vehicles around the world have posted a safety record beyond compare. The potential supply of natural gas is almost unlimited in North America. Providing consumers with ample supplies of a cheap, non-polluting fuel and gas companies with a huge market for natural gas.
