Superdeep drilling. Pt. 3. No. 1 Baden: 28,000 ft calls for planning, more planning
Lone Star Producing Co.--GHK Oil Co.'s E.R. Baden No. 1 in Beckham County, Oklahoma, is not the only ultradeep well being drilled at this time. However, it is a good example of the elaborate planning neessary and the expense that is involved in exploring for deep gas. The well has been planned to a depth of 28,000 ft--early this month it was drilling below 9,500 ft--and the aim is to complete it in the Hunton Lime if it is productive, or at a lesser depth if necessary. The well is being drilled by Loffland Brothers Co. Rig 32, a giant built for the Atomic Energy Commission's big hole work and modified for deep drilling. It has a 3,000-hp drawworks, two 1,650-hp mud pumps, and a crown block rated at 950 tons. Hook load rating is 750 tons. Much time has been spent in planning the well, covering each phase of the operation in detail, and incorporating the latest technology in the recommended procedures. The cost of the venture is expected to run between $4 and $5 million. The anticipated geological section and the expected performance are shown graphically. Two alternate casing programs are illustrated, as well as some of the bottom-hole assemblies used.
