These proceedings represent papers presented at the first conference on future generation photovoltaic technologies held in March, 1997 in Denver, Colorado. The conference was sponsored by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the US Department of Energy. The emphasis was on technical discussion and assessment of recent achievements of photovoltaic technologies. The topics discussed included the roles of government, industry, and universities in developing new concepts; dye{minus}sensitized photochemical cells; single{minus}crystal{minus}like films on low{minus}cost substrates; and new materials and device architecture. The highlight of the conference was the report of over 10{percent} conversion efficiency and the discovering of a new dye for dye{minus}sensitized photochemical cells. Other interesting discussions included the fabrication of low{minus}cost substrates that might be suitable for epitaxial growth of crystalline silicon or gallium arsenide. The photovoltaic technologies considered in this conference were mainly those not in production and not expected to enter production soon because additional long{minus}term research, development and innovation are needed. A fundamental principle guiding the US department of Energy`s National Photovoltaics Program has been to provide support for high{minus}risk, high{minus}payoff PV technologies; this is reflected in the papers presented at the conference. {open_quotes}Leapfrog Technologies {close_quotes} with a long{minus}term potential to achieve high performance at low cost are supported. There were 43 papers altogether in these proceedings, and all are abstracted for the Energy Science and Technology database.(AIP)
