Title: Harmonic mixing in a series array of short superconducting weak-links

Conference · · IEEE Trans. Magn.; (United States)

A new type harmonic mixer using a series array of short superconducting weak-links is proposed for mixer applications at far-infrared and submillimeter wave frequencies. A sizes of Josephson harmonic mixer have to be very small at the high frequencies. A saturation problem of harmonic-mixer likely be risen with increase of signal frequency, effective bandwidth and harmonic order. A shortage of mixer dynamic-range can be eliminated by the use of series array structure. Another important possibility of selectable local frequency generation has been suggested for a high-order harmonic mixer by the experimental result, in which harmonic generation is selectively heightened when the harmonic order is equal to a series number of Josephson elements. Using a eleven-elements series array, a preliminary experiment of harmonic mixing was carried out between two signals at 105.9 GHz and 5.4 - 12.6 GHz. IF output was measured for each harmonic order from 9th to 14th by optimizing local power and bias voltage. In this experiment, 5 dB heightening of the signal-to-noise ratio was obtained at the IF output when the harmonic mixing-order n is equal to the series element number N = 11.
