Inelastic light scattering enhancement near an electronic excitation at 2 eV in La/sub 2/CuO/sub 4+/ital y//

A strong polarization-sensitive resonant enhancement of selected Raman lines is observed in single-crystal La/sub 2/CuO/sub 4+/ital y// near a 2-eV electronic excitation at room temperature. Structure in the electronic excitation spectra as narrow as 50 meV is resolved with this technique. The resonance phenomena are only observed for light polarized parallel to the Cu-O layers and are generally quenched upon the addition of excess oxygen.
