Fly ash analysis by complementary atomic absorption spectrometry and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry

Gross errors may result in the flame atomic absorption determinations of the major oxides in fly ash if matrix and background differences are not resolved. Sample-standard differences have been obviated by means of lithium metaborate fusion of fly ash and selected NBS reference materials, and the subsequent volumetric combination of the dilute nitric acid solutions of the reference materials. Fly ash data thus generated have been verified by energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and a limited use set of fly ash reference materials for rapid X-ray analysis of fly ash has resulted.
